Enumeration commences

The enumeration phase for the 2021 Population and Housing Census has started successfully nationwide. The enumeration commenced following the celebration of Census Night activities in all 272 statistical districts. The homeless, and persons who spent Census Night in transit, short-stay institutions, hotels/guesthouses were enumerated on the Census Night. The enumeration of persons who spent Census Night in households and long-stay institutions will take place from 28th June to 11th July.

His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was enumerated in the early hours of 28th June by the Government Statistician. Following the enumeration, the President urged all persons in Ghana to cooperate with Enumerators and endeavour to be counted. His statement echoed the key messaging in his key note address at the launch of the 30-day countdown to the Census Night. His Excellency stressed that the census was an inclusive national exercise that would generate data for planning. For that reason, all persons regardless of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation will be counted.

His Excellency, the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was also enumerated in the early hours of Monday. He thanked the public for their support during the listing phase of the census data collection and requested the continued support of the public for the enumeration. H.E. Alhaji Dr. Bawumia launched the 100 Days to Census Night publicity, education and campaign in March which facilitated the resource mobilisation and development of strategic partnerships for census implementation over the past few months.

The enumeration of the Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin also took place on Monday morning. The Speaker following his enumeration also reiterated the importance of the census. Rt, Hon. Bagbin has been a strong advocate for the 2021 Population and Housing Census and has worked to ensure that the Ghana Statistical Service has the needed parliamentary support for the exercise.

Former Presidents H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor and H.E. John Dramani Mahama were enumerated in the morning of 28th June as well. Both former Presidents as part of their support for the 2021 Population and Housing Census recorded advocacy videos in English and local language that was utilised as part of the 30-day public education campaign that preceded the Census Night. The advocacy videos were utilised to elicit public cooperation for the census and sensitise citizens on the importance, benefits, and inclusive nature of the census.

The Chief Imam was also enumerated on Monday afternoon. The Chief Imam has supported the census throughout the preparatory phase in diverse ways including providing a solidarity message for the launch of the 100 Days to Census Night launch.

Across all the 16 administrative regions, Regional Ministers, traditional and religious leaders were enumerated today. The Ghana Statistical Service has prioritised the enumeration of leaders at the start of the exercise as part of the census publicity, education, and advocacy strategy to raise awareness of the census exercise and encourage all persons to be counted. Leaders not enumerated today due to scheduling conflicts will be enumerated in the course of the week.

The Ghana Statistical Service thanks the public for their participation so far in the census exercise and counts on their continued cooperation for the success of the 2021 Population and Housing Census.
