University of Ghana hosts first StatsBank Hackathon

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in partnership with the University of Ghana Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) and Statistics Denmark organised the first of five hackathons for university students. The winners of the University of Ghana hackathons will compete with the University of Cape Coast, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University for Development Studies. The hackathons aim to raise awareness of the GSS StatsBank and to promote the use of census data for policy-relevant research.

The hackathon requires teams to compete for 36 hours to develop an innovative statistical product primarily using census data from the StatsBank. The winning team from the University of Ghana developed a visualisation dashboard and website on youth unemployment in Ghana. The team in second place created a visualisation dashboard on ICT access and usage while the team in third place created a dashboard for accessing data on water and sanitation.
